Are you considering a move to a community that genuinely invests in its local workforce and attracts new talent? Look no further than Springfield, Ohio. The city’s commitment to workforce development is exemplified by events like the 8th Grade Career Expo, which significantly separates Springfield from other communities in the region.

The Community Improvement Corporation of Springfield Clark County recently hosted its 10th annual 8th-grade Career Expo. This dynamic event brought together over 1,000 students from Springfield, Northwestern, Kenton Ridge, Northeastern, Shawnee, and Greenon, alongside approximately 30 local employers. Held at the Hollenbeck Bayley Creative Arts and Conference Center on May 9th, the Expo aimed to give students a comprehensive look at the diverse world of career opportunities available in their future.

One of the Expo's standout features was its focus on all 16 nationally recognized career clusters. From agriculture and natural resources to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), students had the chance to explore various career paths, including architecture, business management, health sciences, information technology, and more.

Springfield Area Schools Work to Prepare Students for Success

Before the Career Exploration Experience, students completed the YouScience assessment at their schools. This comprehensive online tool assesses students' aptitudes and interests across a wide range of career clusters, helping them identify which areas they are most suited for. Armed with this knowledge, students arrived at the Expo well-prepared to engage with the 29 Clark County employers, ensuring a meaningful and productive experience for both parties.

"Our goal for this event is to lay the groundwork for these students to better understand all the amazing opportunities right here in our community which align directly with each student's aptitudes and interests," said Amy Donahoe, Director of Workforce Development.

Through events like the 8th Grade Career Expo, Springfield forges a strong bond between students and employers, demonstrating its unwavering commitment to workforce development from an early stage in students' educational journeys. These events create a sense of community, providing invaluable opportunities for students to connect with real employers and professionals across various fields, laying the foundation for future career exploration through high school courses, vocational training, or higher education.

Springfield is On the Move With Numerous Opportunities

For prospective workers, the Expo underscores Springfield’s dedication to cultivating a skilled and knowledgeable workforce. The city’s proactive approach in introducing early career conversations and showcasing the diverse opportunities available positions Springfield as a prime location for professional growth and business success. Companies considering a move to Springfield can be assured of a steady pipeline of talented future employees nurtured within the community.

"You see the 'aha moment' in many students' faces when they learn about a career they never knew existed, and even more so when they hear about something new that aligns with their interests and aptitudes," noted Donahoe.

"This event has been instrumental in guiding students towards their future careers, and we've seen many success stories emerge from it over the years," added Kaitlyn Tyler, Talent and Education Coordinator. Positive feedback from employers and schools highlighted the Expo's effectiveness in introducing students to work early. These interactions help students envision their future careers while providing Springfield businesses with a pool of potential future employees.

As plans are already underway for the 11th annual Expo in May 2025, the event's impact is set to continue growing, ensuring a bright future for Springfield’s youth and economy. By fostering a connection between education and industry, Springfield is creating a sustainable environment where businesses and the local workforce can thrive together, emphasizing the event's long-term impact on the community.
